Focus Czech Republic
In the frame of this year’s programme focus of the 47th Maribor Theatre Festival we are turning our attention to contemporary Czech playwriting and theatre. For this occasion we have published the book Contemporary Czech Drama. The book features plays selected by the experts of the Prague Arts and Theatre Institute. They have decided to introduce the most recent plays as none of them is older than two years. Although the selection offers a somewhat limited overview it is still representative even in a wider context:
- Petr Kolečko: Egg, translated by Nives Vidrih (the title of the original Vejce, 2011)
- Lenka Lagronová: Out of Stardust, translated by Martina Maurič Lazar (the title of the original Z prachu hvězd, 2010)
- Roman Sikora: Confession of a Masochist, translated by Tatjana Jamnik (the title of the original Zpověď masochisty, 2011)
The presentation of the book will be on Monday, 22 October 2012, at the First Stage of the First Maribor Grammar School, together with a lecture on contemporary Czech theatre and drama by Vít Pokorný. Following the lecture and the presentation will be a staged reading of Confession of a Masochist by AGRFT students under the mentorship of the director Yulia Roschina and a conversation with the playwright Roman Sikora. The Focus Czech Republic continues on Tuesday, 23 October, with staged readings of the plays Out of Stardust and Egg as well as a conversation with the playwright Petr Kolečko.
On Wednesday, 24 October 2012, Martina Černá, M.A., will present the Prague Arts and Theatre Institute. The presentation will be followed by a screening of Designated Space, a film on the Prague Quadrennial 2011.
The performance Europeana, which is part of the international programme Bridges, is also part of the Focus Czech Republic.
