Three Sisters is usually interpreted as a play on yearning … Yearning for a life that would stir the blood in the veins of Olga, Masha, and Irina, filling them with sense and love. Yet Three Sisters is also a play on a desperate struggle to escape the province which suffocates and paralyses people making them increasingly numb; it is a play on two diametrically opposite life concepts: a passive and idealistic one and an activist and pragmatic one. What paralyses the three sisters on their way to making their wishes come true and what, on the other hand, propels Natasha to finally make hers a reality?
