No one speaks of love these days. There are debates on sex, ageing, aesthetic surgery, money, artificial insemination, depression, and dandruff. But not about love. In fact, love is considered a second-rate sense. Still, it is not necessarily pathetic or corny since it appears in Dangerous Liaisons as the only corrective of hypocrisy and intrigues, of the will to power and domination, of beauty as merely a cruel and dark weapon in the battle of all against all.
A military officer from Amiens, Choderlos de Laclos (1741–1803) has disclosed the cynicism, hypocrisy, and cold-bloodedness of aristocratic society in his psychologically precise, fascinating, and eternally relevant literary masterpiece Dangerous Liaisons. In 1985 the English playwright Christopher Hampton made an outstanding stage adaptation of the novel, which is the basis for the Maribor production.
