SHOWCASE

A selection of Slovene productions presented to the international professional public and foreign critics. The productions are selected each year by the Maribor Theatre Festival artistic director Alja Predan. This year the Showcase comprises six productions from the Competition Programme and two productions from the Accompanying Programme.

International Programme BRIDGES

The International Programme Bridges will present some unconventional productions from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, thus enabling a dialogue with the Slovene theatre reality.  The programme was selected by the artistic director Alja Predan.

SPANISH FOCUS

This year’s Focus Section is dedicated to Spanish dramatic literature and theatre. In order to acquaint the Slovene public with Spanish dramatic literature, we have translated five contemporary plays that will be published by the Maribor Theatre Festival in the book Contemporary Drama in Spain.
The Spanish Focus will take place between 20 and 22 October at the Maribor First Grammar School and will comprise:

Five staged readings of contemporary plays from Spain published in the book Contemporary Drama in Spain:

  • Josep Maria Benet y Jornet: Desire, translated from Catalonian by Simona Škrabec;
  • Manuel Molins: Abú Magrib, translated from Catalonian by Simona Škrabec;
  • Patxo Telleria: Pancreas, originally written in Basque, translated from the authorised translation to Castillian by Marjeta Drobnič;
  • Lluïsa Cunillé: This Never-Ending Aria, translated from Castillian by Maja Šabec;
  • Juan Mayorga: The Boy in the Last Row, translated from Castillian by Marjeta Drobnič.

The staged readings will be prepared by the students of the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television Ljubljana (AGRFT UL) under the supervision of director Yulia Roschina.

Two Spanish productions:

  • BRICKMAN BRANDO BUBBLE BOOM, based on the concept by Àlex Serrano and Pau Palacios, produced by Agrupación Señor Serrano, Spain;
  • Israel Galván, GOLDEN AGE, choreographer and dancer Israel Galván, produced by A NEGRO Producciones, Spain.

SYMPOSIA

  • Theatre of Resistance, organised by the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television Ljubljana (AGRFT UL) on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding the Partisan theatre.
  • Zupan’s Dramatic Opus, organised by the Association of Theatre Critics and Researchers of Slovenia (DGKTS). The symposium will be followed by a round table discussion and the reading of a yet unknown play by Vitomil Zupan, The Third Embryo, presented by the students of AGRFT UL.
  • Silent Character(s) in Dramatic Literature, on Stage and in Reality, organised by Simona Hamer. The round table discussion is an integral part of the artistic research of the dramatist and dramaturg Simona Hamer, which will be concluded next year with a performance.

EXHIBITIONS

  • Images of Celebration, all of the Maribor Theatre Festival posters from previous years will be exhibited in the foyer of the Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana.
  • The Slovenian Theatre Institute in collaboration with Novi ZATO. Institute is preparing the virtual exhibition 2013 Borštnik Grand Prix Award: The Crazy Locomotive, 2011 Borštnik Grand Prix Award: Bartleby, the Scrivener; Recipient of 2013 Borštnik Ring: Olga Kacjan and Recipient of 2011 Borštnik Ring: Milada Kalezić. The exhibitions will be online at www.sigledal.org upon their presentation at the Maribor Theatre Festival.

AGRFT UL AND THE FACULTY OF ARTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR (FF UM) AT THE MARIBOR THEATRE FESTIVAL

The already traditional collaboration between AGRFT UL, FF UM and the Maribor Slavic Association will take place this year as well. The programme will comprise:

  • Presentations of AGRFT productions from the school year 2013/14;
  • The playwriting workshop Instant Play/Performance at the First Grammar School Maribor for senior students;
  • The Maribor Theatre Festival daily bulletin as well as discussions on productions will be prepared with the participation of students of both academic institutions;
  • Conversations on literary novelties co-moderated by students of FF UM.

The Slovene National Theatre Maribor, the First Grammar School Maribor, the Maribor Puppet Theatre, Štuk, Rotovž Ceremonial Hall, Vetrinj Mansion, the University of Maribor, Kibla.

THE JURY

The jury has five members: Barbara Orel, Professor at AGRFT UL, dramaturg and critic; Tea Rogelj, curator of the Slovenian Theatre Institute and critic; Petra Vidali, editor-in-chief of the Cultural section in the daily newspaper Večer and critic; Tomasz Kubikowski, assistant artistic director of the Warsaw National Theatre, dramaturg and translator; and Jasen Boko, dramatist, critic and dramaturg from Split.

BORŠTNIK RING JURY

The Borštnik Ring jury has five members: the artistic director of the Maribor Theatre Festival and one of the previous recipients of the Borštnik Ring together with three experts from the field of theatre and film. The members of this year’s jury are Janez Hočevar-Rifle, Vinko Möderndorfer, Mojca Jan Zoran, Metod Pevec and Alja Predan.

SELECTOR

The selector of the Competition and Accompanying Programmes of the 49th Maribor Theatre Festival is the editor-in-chief of both Maska, Performing Arts Journal and its publishing house Maska, theatre researcher and critic, Amelia Kraigher.

CONVERSATIONS ON LITERARY NOVELTIES in the field of performing arts will take place in Vetrinj Mansion and will be moderated by dramaturg Ksenija Repina Kramberger.

DISCUSSION ON PRODUCTIONS will take place in Vetrinj Mansion and will be moderated by theatre researchers Nika Arhar and Katja Čičigoj.

FESTBUS

The Maribor Theatre Festival is also attractive to both visitors from the region of Ljubljana and foreigners whose departure point is Ljubljana because during the festival the Festbus will commute daily from Ljubljana to Maribor and back to Ljubljana for only 5 EUR round trip. Festbus transportation is available, however, only for those who have previously purchased tickets for the performance and made a reservation for a bus seat. FESTIVAL SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGES: PRE-SELECTED AND CUSTOM

This year the Maribor Theatre Festival will offer two types of festival subscription packages: one pre-selected by the organisers and another that the festival goers will be able to custom select themselves. These custom subscriptions will offer the visitors a 25% discount when purchasing at least four tickets for four different performances. As a bonus, festival subscribers will get a ticket for the closing festival awards ceremony. Subscribers of the custom selected package may also purchase additional tickets at a discount.

ALREADY AVAILABLE!

As of May 2014, the tickets for the opening performance of Murmel Murmel produced by the Berlin theatre Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz are available at a promotional price. Ticket prices: from 2 to 30 June 2014: 18 EUR; from 1 to 30 September 2014: 20 EUR; from 1 to 17 October 2014: 22 EUR; and on the day of the performance: 25 EUR.

From 1 September 2014, tickets for the 49th Maribor Theatre Festival will be available for purchase in Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana. Tickets for the production of Murmel Murmel are already available.

Pre-sales take place from from 1 September to 5 October 2014. Tickets will be available at the regular sale price from 6 to 26 October 2014.
DISCOUNTS (available only at the box office of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor with an identity card or certificate. The discount applies to regular ticket prices. Discounts are mutually exclusive and cannot be multiplied.)
