Euripides’ Alcestis stands in a no man’s land between comedy and tragedy, between the old and the new, between life and death. It is split between duty and expectation. Alcestis herself is a hero and a rebel. She makes a conscious, free decision and completely abandons herself to an ideal at the expense of everything else: her life, her children, and her husband.
