A few months ago I was sick. Right before the surgery and prior to receiving anaesthesia, it occurred to me that I might die; yet I felt no fear. I don’t know whether I will feel the same way when faced with death but back then I was overwhelmed with a powerful feeling that all that I had created so far and what was behind me had absolutely no meaning. All the social value of my endeavours simply vanished in the thin air. All my deeds, the entire history of the world – none of it were more than a heap of ashes. At the same time, I had an unpleasant feeling that there was nothing in front of me.
