Yun-Cheol Kim

Yun-Cheol Kim is editor, critic, writer, lecturer. He is President of IATC. At the Korea National University of Arts he is a dean of School of Drama. He also edits The Korean Theatre Journal. He is the two time winner of "The Critic of the Year Award". He has published nine books so far, two of which are anthologies of theatre reviews.

Yun-Cheol Kim’s paper "In Defense of Inter-national Criticism" describes his experience with showcases of national theatres and performances at international theatre festivals resulting from his involvement with the AICT/IATC international association of theatre critics. To his own surprise, throughout this period he produced more overviews of foreign theatres than reflections touching upon his own national theatre. Given the interaction of factors that during the past fifteen years suffused his perspective and perception, he reflects on how the international theatre context transformed his point of view and on how he turned this external factor to profit, with the result being more interesting writing for less directly involved readers.
