Magnus Florin
Magnus Florin is holding a position as a Head of Dramaturgy in Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm since 2009. He was a dramaturg, producer and a Head of Radio Drama on the Swedish National Radio and a dramaturg of Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. He is a literary critic, cultural contributor in news papers, journals and radio, author of poetry, short prose and novels, has published seven books, he is also an author of opera libretos and theatre dramatizations.
The vagueness of the profile of the dramaturg’s work may be a quality. Dramaturgy and dramaturg are historical and shifting concepts and it may be an advantage keeping them open and dynamic, so that each dramaturg may invent his/her identity in the theatrical/performative field.
Paper will transmit some experiences and suggestions from the role of the dramaturg as a permanent member of the theatre. To mention some:
- The dramaturg as a person shall be a link between the world of the theatre and the outer world of society.
- Aesthetically the dramaturg shall have good knowledge about and personal contact with culture as a whole and with other art fields.
- The dramaturg shall be an expert in the different aspects of meaning in the repertoary as a whole and in the specific productions.
- The dramaturg shall have a genuine curiousity towards different kinds of dramatic writing.
- The dramaturg shall work with all parts of dramaturgy: play reading, repertoary planning and production work.
- The dramaturg shall have a strong attention on language in the art work.
- The dramaturg shall enjoy seeing the theatre not just as a house for production of plays, but as a special institution, with a unique position between the private and the public, the personal life and society.
