A true drama unfolds at the end of the 1950s in front of a red canvas from the Seagram series that would soon be hanging together with the other ones in a prestigious restaurant. The renowned painter Mark Rothko engages his young assistant Ken. The dynamics of their relation discloses the generation shift occurring in the art world and the advent of new creators who depict the everyday life in the Pop-Art style, uncompromisingly insisting on meaninglessness. This is totally opposite from Rothko’s vision of painting in which he strives towards higher transcendent realms. Red portrays the confrontation of two generations and two artistic sensitivities but first and foremost it talks about Rothko’s self-confrontation at the peak of his career when the nuances on his canvases are beginning to acquire darker shades.i.
